Understanding the patterns and magnitude of life science publication Retractions in the last four decades

This study analyzes nearly five decades of life-science publication retractions using data from the Retraction Watch database to identify trends across time, countries, and causes of retraction. The authors find that retractions have increased substantially since the late 1970s, driven by a combination of research misconduct, errors, and evolving publication practices. The paper argues that understanding these patterns is essential for strengthening research integrity policies and developing more effective mechanisms to prevent and address unreliable scientific research.
